NEW BABY PIG EMERGENCY

THE MOST COMMON CALLS THAT I GET ARE FROM THOSE THAT PICK UP BABIES FROM AUCTIONS, SWAP MEETS AND IRRESPONSIBLE "BREEDERS" THAT SELL BABIES FAR TOO YOUNG.

I TRY TO BE AVAILABLE AS MUCH AS I CAN.....BUT, JUST INCASE;

MY BABY WONT EAT:

BABIES DO NOT NATURALLY START EATING SOLID FOOD (WHEN LEFT WITH THEIR MOMMAS) UNTIL THEY ARE 5-7 WEEKS OF AGE. SOMETIMES THERE MAY BE A FEW THAT ARE SOONER OR LATER THAN THAT.

SO DO NOT PANIC IF THEY WILL NOT EAT SOLID FOOD YET!!!

AND DO NOT OFFER THEM SOLID FOOD UNTIL 4+ WEEKS. IT IS TOO MUCH FOR THEIR DIGESTIVE TRACT. JUST LIKE HUMANS THEY NEED TIME FOR THEIR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM TO DEVELOPE.

BABIES NURSE FROM THEIR MOMS EVERY HOUR. AND DEPENDING ON THE MOMS MILK PRODUCTION AND HOW MANY PIGLETS ARE NURSING FROM THAT MOM WILL DEPEND ON HOW MUCH MILK THEY ARE GETTING. IT WILL AVERAGE FROM A TABLESPOON TO NEARLY AN OUNCE.

The smaller the litter, the larger the babies will be as they are getting more milk.

THE BEST MILK TO GIVE IS GOATS MILK. I AM A 100% ADVOCATE OF GOATS MILK. GOATS MILK IS NATURAL. IT IS NOT FULL OF FILLERS AND GARBAGE LIKE THE MILK REPLACERS. GOATS MILK IS A UNIVERSAL MILK AND ANY ANIMAL OR HUMAN CAN BE SUSTAINED ON IT. IT HAS A SMALLER LACTOSE MOLECULE WHICH MAKES IT MORE EASILY DIGESTED. THERE ARE ALSO LESS RISKS AS IT IS HUMAN GRADE (FROM THE STORE) AND LESS LIKELY TO BE CONTAMINATED. YEARS AGO I HAD PURCHASED AN ANIMAL MILK REPLACER THAT WAS TAINTED WITH ECOLI AND WOUND UP LOSING A CRIA AND ALMOST LOST A LAMB BECAUSE OF THIS TAINTED BATCH.

 HOW MUCH TO FEED:
WELL, THIS IS A TOUGH ONE… AS EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT

AT MINIMUM TRY TO GET THEM TO DRINK A TABLESPOON PER HOUR. NOW, IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME FOR THEIR STOMACHES TO ACCOMADATE MORE MILK. OFFER THEM MORE THAN A TABLESPOON. DO NOT LET THEM EAT SO MUCH THAT THEIR BELLIES BECOME HARD AND DISTENDED.

INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF MILK AND SPACE OUT THE TIME BETWEEN FEEDINGS AS THEIR BELLIES START ADJUSTING.

IT IS HARD TO TELL YOU HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN AS YOU MAY NOT KNOW THE REAL AGE. MORE OFTEN THEN NOT THESE “PEOPLE” SELL THEM AND SAY THAT THEY ARE OLDER THAN WHAT THEY REALLY ARE.

I AM NOT SAYING YOU HAVE TO FEED THEM EVERY HOUR, UNLESS THEY ARE NEWBORNS. SO FOR EXAMPLE: YOU WOULD GIVE THEM AT A MINIMUM 4 TABLESPOONS PER 4 HOURS. (SOME WILL REQUIRE MORE)

1 TABLESPOON = ½ OUNCE

4 TABLESPOONS = 2 OUNCES

WHERE TO FIND GOATS MILK:

MOST GROCERY STORES CARRY GOATS MILK AND YOU CAN FIND IT IN THE DAIRY SECTION. THERE ARE 2 MAIN PRODUCERS. MEYENBURG AND POPLAR HILLS.

SOME STORES MAY NOT HAVE THE "LIQUID" VERSION IN THE DAIRY SECTION. CHECK THE BAKING SECTION. YOU WILL OFTEN FIND CANNED "EVAPORATED GOATS MILK" (FOLLOW THE CAN INSTRUCTIONS TO DILUTE)

SOMETIMES YOU WILL ALSO FIND POWDERED GOATS MILK IN A CAN IN THE BAKING SECTION OR NEAR OTHER POWDERED MILK.

OR CONTACT MENBER DIRECTLY 209-667-2019. TELL THEM YOU WANT TO ORDER THE BULK POWDERED GOATS MILK. IT COMES IN 5 LB BAGS.

CHECK WITH LOCAL FARMERS. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW ANY ASK AT THE LOCAL FEED SUPPLY STORE OR MILL

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT FEED COWS MILK OR RAW EGGS. COWS MILK IS TOO HARSH ON THE STOMACH. THIS GOES FOR YOGURT TOO (CAN BE FED WHEN OLDER). AND RAW EGGS COULD BE TAINTED

Sometimes the babies will not drink it right away. Add a dab of honey to sweeten it up a bit. dab your finger in the milk and put it in their mouth. or use an eye dropper.

If the babies are really young, they may not yet know how to drink yet. Most babies do not start drinking water until 4-5 weeks. Some a week sooner or later. (this is when left with Momma)

Sometimes you may have to just... harsh as it sounds push their face in it

I do not encourage bottle feeding. It is easier for them to aspirate and they could die from choking or from pneumonia developing from milk getting into the lungs.

Babies are born with 8 deciduous teeth aka milk teeth, fangs..etc. These should have been cut. If they were not this will need to be done. So, be careful as they are very sharp  until you have them cut (at the gum line)  But do not worry about that quite yet... the main thing is to get the baby drinking milk.

At about 1 week of age they start cutting their rear teeth, which take a few weeks to fully erupt.

12-14 days they will completely sluff off their baby skin

2-3 weeks they start cutting their front two bottom teeth

4-6 weeks they start cutting their top two front teeth

NOW this can vary some... If the babies were malnourished or ill it may delay the development.

 MY BABY HAS DIARREHA:

1. IT SIMPLY COULD BE FROM STRESS (IF YOU JUST GOT THEM AND THEY HAVE IT)

2. IT COULD BE FROM SWITCHING FROM WHATEVER MILK THEY WERE ON AND SWITCHING THEM HAS CAUSED SOME STOMACH UPSET.

YOU CAN GIVE THEM PEPTO BISMOL OR IMMODIUM. 1/2 CC EVERY FEW HOURS. THEY WILL SPIT MOST OF IT OUT. IT CAN ALSO TURN THEIR POO DARK.

3. THEY COULD HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ECOLI, OR SIMPLY FROM THE STRESS. (WE ALL NATURALLY HAVE ECOLI IN OUR INTESTINES). THE SMELL IS PRETTY UNMISTAKEABLE. IT SMELLS AWFUL. IT WILL START OUT BROWN AND THEN TURN YELLOWISH. IF IT TURNS WHITE, THE BABY IS IN REALLY BIG TROUBLE. IF A REALLY YOUNG BABY, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 24 HOURS!!! COULD BE MORE, OR LESS. SORRY TO SCARE YOU BUT IT IS IMPERATIVE TO ACT QUICKLY.

START PEPTO BISMOL RIGHT AWAY.

YOU NEED TO GET A PRODUCT CALLED "SPECTOGARD"(SPECTINOMYCIN). IT IS AN ANTIBIOTIC AVAILABLE AT MOST FARM STORES AND THROUGH YOUR FARM VET. YOU GIVE A FULL DROPPER FULL 2 X A DAY. CONTINUE WITH THE PEPTO EVERY FEW HOURS AND BE SURE TO KEEP THE BABY HYDRATED. YOU MAY NEED TO GIVE DROPPER FULLS OF GATORADE IN THE SIDE OF THEIR MOUTH IF THEY ARE REFUSING TO DRINK THEIR MILK. YOU SHOULD START TO SEE IMPROVEMENT IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS. IF NOT, YOU NEED TO GET THEM TO A VETERINARIAN
