SICK PIGGIE: RESPIRATORY ISSUES

RESPIRATORY ISSUES

JUST BECAUSE IT IS WARM OUT, SUMMER TIME, ETC. DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOUR PIGGIE CAN NOT GET A RESPIRATORY INFECTION AND OR PNEUMONIA

PNEUMONIA CAN BE DEADLY

THEY MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A FEVER. SOMETIMES THEY WILL BE HYPOTHERMIC.

THEY WILL BE LETHARGIC AND HAVE FAST RAPID BREATHING OR LABORED BREATHING. THEY MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE RASPY BREATHING. THEY CAN GET “DRY PNEUMONIA” AND “WET PNEUMONIA”. WET WILL HAVE RASPY BREATHS, DRY WILL NOT.

WET PNEUMONIA OFTEN HAPPENS WITH SMALL BABIES THAT ARE BEING BOTTLE FED AS THEY HAVE ASPIRATED FLUID INTO THEIR LUNGS.

SOMETIMES THEIR NOSTRILS WILL BE PLUGGED WITH MATTER AND SOMETIMES NOT. USUALLY IF THEY HAVE WET, GOBBY SNOT IN THEIR NOSE IT IS AN UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION (URT).

THEY MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE RUNNY EYES

THEY MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A WET/DRY NOSE.

THEIR APPETITE WILL DECREASE AND THEY WILL STOP EATING AND DRINKING.

IF THEIR BREATHING IS REALLY LABORED, GUMS ARE PALE NEARLY WHITE, NOSE IS REALLY DRY, EYES LOOK SUNK IN…. THERE IS NOT A LOT OF TIME. YOU NEED A VET NOW!!!!!  WITH NEWBORN BABIES THIS CAN HAPPEN WITHIN A MATTER OF HOURS.

YOU NEED TO GET VETERINARIAN CARE ASAP!!!!!! THE YOUNGER THE PIGGIE THE MORE URGENT THE ISSUE IS.

BE SURE TO KEEP THEM WELL HYDRATED AND VERY WARM UNTIL YOU CAN SEEK VETERINARIAN CARE. IF THEY ARE HAVING A REALLY HARD TIME BREATHING, TRY TO CLEAR THEIR NOSE OF ANY OBSTRUCTIONS WITH A WARM WET CLOTH AND/OR Q-TIPS.

MOVE THEM INTO A BATHROOM, BRING IN A HEATER OR TURN UP THE HEAT. TURN THE SHOWER ON HOT AND GET THE BATHROOM NICE AND STEAMY TO HELP THEM BREATH BETTER.

BE SURE TO KEEP THEM VERY WARM WHEN MOVING THEM FROM THE BATHROOM AND AFTER.

RUBBING AND PATTING THEIR BACKS (WITH SOME FORCE, NOT JUST A LITTLE BABY PAT) WILL HELP TO LOOSEN UP THE FLUIDS.

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT ANTI-BIOTICS THAT CAN BE USED. PENICILLIN IS BETTER THAN NOTHING IF YOU CAN NOT GET TO THE VET RIGHT AWAY BUT IS REALLY ONLY EFFECTIVE ON 1-2 STRAINS OF PNEUMONIA, AMPICILLIN (POLY-FLEX) IS MORE EFFECTIVE AND WILL TREAT MORE STRAINS THAN PENICILLIN.

MY VETERINARIAN RECOMMENDS EXCENEL. IT IS THE ONLY THING THAT I USE FOR THE TREATMENT OF PNEUMONIA. IT COVERS A BROADER SPECTRUM OF PNEUMONIA STRAINS. WE ALSO GIVE A DOSE OF DRAXXIN.   OTHER VETENARIANS MAY USE OTHER ANTIBIOTICS. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY AND TREATED A BABY THAT HAD “DRY PNEUMONIA” WITH AMPICILLIN. I HAD A NECROPSY DONE JUST TO BE SURE AND TO CONFIRM THAT MY OWN PERSONAL DIAGNOSIS WAS NOT INCORRECT. (I AM NOT A VETERINARIAN BUT, I HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AND DO CONSULT WITH MY VETERINARIAN OFTEN)( DR. RUDOLF IS LIKE “DR HOUSE”, I CAN CALL HIM AND TELL HIM THE PROBLEM AND HE CAN USUALLY DIAGNOSE OVER THE PHONE. IT IS RARE THAT I HAVE TO BRING ANY ANIMAL IN. UNLESS, OF COURSE I CAN NOT BY LAW ADMINISTER THE TREATMENT OR IF IT IS A SURGICAL PROCEDURE. HE IS AN INCREDIBLE VETERINARIAN!!!)

THE STRAIN OF PNEUMONIA THAT BABY CHARLIE HAD WAS NOT TREATABLE WITH AMPICILLIN. AFTER THAT DR RUDOLF RECOMMENDED THAT I ALWAYS USE EXCENEL TO START AS IT COVERS A MUCH BROADER SPECTRUM OF STRAINS.

UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS CAN VARY AS FAR AS THE TREATMENT. SOME VETS FAVOR AMOXICILLIN, CEPHALEXIN, BAYTRIL..ETC.  DRAXXIN IS A LONG ACTING “URT” AND CAN BE VERY EFFECTIVE. IT DOES TAKE UP TO 24 HOURS TO WORK BUT IS EFFECTIVE. SOME WILL TREAT WITH STEROIDS AS WELL.
